Hilton Head Travel by Car
The majority of Hilton Head vacationers get to the island by car. Exit 8 on I-95 in South Carolina gets you to Hilton Head Island fast.
As soon as you exit Interstate 95 you’re on Hwy. 278 and that goes straight to Hilton Head. The trip from exit 8 to the island takes about 45 minutes.
Once over the bridge to Hilton Head you can choose an “express route” to the south-end of the island by using the Cross Island Expressway. It’s $1 per trip - but not a necessity to use this toll road.
The real positive of landing at the small & friendly Hilton Head Island Airport is that you save about an hour of driving to the island.
Both HHH & SAV airports have taxi, limo & rental car services and both airports will be MUCH better than whatever airport you are leaving from.
A final Hilton Head air travel tip: if the airfare into HHH is only $30 more per ticket (than SAV), chose to land at the island’s airport. The less time driving, the better.
Hilton Head Travel by Air
Most Hilton Head visitors that arrive by air come into the airport in Savannah, GA. It’s officially known as the Savannah / Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) and it is a modern, well-organized and easy airport to navigate.
Generally SAV airport offers more airline choices and cheaper flights than your other option…
The Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) has one major airline – US Air, which connects from the Charlotte, NC airport (CLT).
